GLEBE
YOUTH SERVICE PROGRAMS
| | | | | | Glebe
Youth Service runs a range of programs for young people aged 12
to 24 who live, work or play in the Glebe area.
GYS is funded by the Department of Community
Services and the City of
Sydney, with a number of other small grants and fundraising for
specific programs.
The primary target for our programs are the young
disadvantaged people
living on the Glebe Estate, a Department of Housing area that covers
most of the bottom half of Glebe. These young people face a range of
issues including poverty, family dysfunction, alcohol and other drug
use, chronic school refusal and poor literacy leading to unemployment.
The majority of young people who use the service
are Aboriginal, with
the attendant disadvantages of poor health, over-representation within
the legal system and other effects of entrenched racism.
GYS runs the following programs to assist young
people to deal with
these matters and provide a safe, non-judgemental environment for their
recreational needs.
| |
| Drop
In runs from 3 till 5 every weekday and provides sporting, cultural and
other fun activities for young people to enjoy. The program allows
workers to engage with young people, gain their trust and provide
opportunities to address their many problems. We provide a nutritional
meal every day as part of our Food Program.
| |
| Casework
is the ongoing work we do to assist young people to move forward in
addressing their problems. This can mean attending appointments such as
housing or primary health, referring to other agencies and motivational
counselling.
| |
| Every
morning young people attend the service for Crisis Intervention and
Intake. Where these are new clients we collect appropriate information
and then assign a caseworker if needed to help them in the long term.
Staff can assist with areas such as accommodation, education, health,
family and legal problems.
| |
| Girlzone
is a girl’s only program run with City of Sydney and
Elsie’s Women’s Refuge where young women take part
in fun activities designed to provide some living skills development.
This program is every Tuesday afternoon till 6:30.
| |
| Glebe
Re-Engage Education Project attempts to address chronic school refusal
among Glebe youth. Run in partnership with the Department of Education
and Training we bring young people who are not currently attending
school into the service Tuesday to Thursday. These young people work on
their literacy and numeracy then we focus on pathways back into
mainstream education such as Secondary school, TAFE or vocational
training.
| |
| After
Dark is part of our obligations under our funding from the City of
Sydney. Each Friday and Saturday night we run recreational activities
from 7:30 till 11:30pm. These activities are designed to divert young
people from drinking, crime and other unhealthy or antisocial
behaviours.
| |
| We
are currently running a Men’s Young Offenders Group in
partnership with Juvenile Justice. Young men from the area are invited
into an ongoing discussion about the outcomes they are looking for in
life and the means they can take to achieve these goals. The program
will be punctuated by ‘safe risk taking activities’
such as go-karting and high ropes courses along with visits by sporting
and other successful men.
| |
| NRMA
have provided a small grant for the creation of five Community Safety
Murals to be placed around the Glebe area. We are targeting young
people who may have participated in some of the crime and other unsafe
behaviours taking place in Glebe.
| |
| Each
Thursday and Friday afternoon a local music producer runs the studio
project Get Real. Young people who are interested in music production
record and are taught computer and production skills in our mini studio
and we hope to have a CD available by
Christmas.
| |
| Each
Thursday young people are invited to get involved in our Video
Production Project. In its early stages we hope that this will develop
into a full blown film project giving both skills and the opportunity
for young people to have a say about their life and situation. We are
seeking donations and loans of equipment to carry out this project to
its best potential. This project is also volunteer staffed.
